To hone - to improve a skill or talent that is already well developed.

Example - If you practice foreign languages with native speakers on a regular basis, you will be able to hone your language skills.


Shin up

Shin up - to climb up a tree, rope, pole etc quickly, using your hands and legs.

Example - Mark shinned up that tree yesterday.

To get through

To get through - to be connected to someone by telephone.

Example - "It is so hard to get through to John on his mobile. He is always so busy!"
                  "I tried to call her but couldn't get through"



To subside

To subside - to become weaker, less severe or less violent.

Example - "Don't worry, his pain should subside in an hour or two. Go get some rest!"

To pull someone's leg

To pull someone's leg - to tell someone something that is not true as a way of joking with them.

Example - "Is Meg really going to quit her job today or was she just pulling my leg?"

Square meal - a large and balanced meal that makes you feel satisfied.

Example: "Everyone should have three square meals a day".



Fit as a fiddle

Fit as a fiddle - very fit; in very good health.

Example - "Your grandfather was as fit as a fiddle right up to the time he died".

A square peg in a round hole - someone or something that does not suit the position or situation that they are in.

Example - "I always feel like a square peg in a round hole at my office. My co-workers seem so ambitious and dedicated but I just want to make a living".
